Graphic Packaging International has pioneered colour management in printed packaging, becoming the world’s first packaging company to gain certification under the BPIF ISO12647-2 Scheme at the end of 2010.
The BPIF led the development of a UK Certification scheme for ISO12647-2, knowing that as in earlier Quality and Environmental Standards, buyers should expect independent auditing and certification from UKAS accredited certification bodies.
ISO12647-2 specifies a number of process parameters and their values to be applied when preparing colour separations for four-colour offset printing. The aim is to be able to produce colour accurate work on a consistent basis.
Working to meet the exacting standards of the BPIF Scheme and the requirements of UKAS, Graphic Packaging International has been certified by Print and Media Certification Ltd (PMC), the first certification body to audit against the BPIF Scheme using an approach set by international certification body standards.
Colour specialists Mellow Colour worked with Graphic Packaging International to help establish initial colour quality management systems and guiding the Graphic Packaging International Colour Team through the ISO12647 certification process. Graphic Packaging International has consistently demonstrated technical expertise, helping us achieve Mellow Colour Proficient Printer status. This acted as a perfect stepping stone to independent BPIF Certification.
Adherence to these guidelines has provided an overall consistency to the work produced, as well as consistency of runs of a particular job. The management team has also been pleasantly surprised by the impact that it has had on certain areas of production, including a significant reduction in waste, which has an obvious environmental benefit, as well as keeping an ever tighter control over production costs. As a further benefit, Graphic Packaging International has also seen positive impact on the time taken for a customer to approve a job whilst on press. It helps to make sign-off a faster and more straightforward process when the customer is comparing the approved GMG produced proof to the actual on-press print. GMG proofing is now in place at the Bardon, Gateshead and Newburn sites. Proofing quality is also assured and certified to ISO12647-7 standard.
Additional critical elements include standard viewing conditions to D50 and the regular calibration of all colour measuring equipment.
